Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi emphasized that the Nasi iSpani program was not a political maneuver but a genuine effort to provide employment opportunities for the unemployed. Lesufi explained that the program was initiated by the provincial government after the discontinuation of the Presidential Youth Initiative, which aimed to employ youth as teacher assistants in schools.
Lesufi stated that the Gauteng government intervened to support young people until the national government could provide further guidance. Despite facing challenges due to the lack of clarity from the national government, they extended financial support to bridge the gap. Recently, they received confirmation that the national government will continue the program and are finalizing the implementation model.
While some beneficiaries of the Nasi iSpani program have expressed their desire for permanent appointments, Lesufi remains committed to creating opportunities for the youth. The program’s goal is to empower young individuals and contribute to achieving positive outcomes, such as improved matric results.
