Highlights of Saturday’s Protests
Major cities across Nigeria saw deployments of hundreds of police officers and security personnel. Protests seemed to be dying down in some areas, while momentum was sustained in the northern and southern states. The government of Lagos state commended protesters for their peaceful demonstration.
Organizers threatened to lock down the country with a planned “One Million Man March” on Saturday. However, protests ended peacefully as the collective voice of the people was recognized by the government.
Reasons for Protests
Nigeria is facing a cost-of-living crisis with skyrocketing inflation and stagnant wages. Demands include lowering fuel prices and addressing the impact of subsidy cuts and devaluation of currency. Security forces have been criticized for using excessive force against protesters.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu called for an end to protests and encouraged dialogue to address the concerns of the people.
