In a recent interview with the Guardian, London Mayor Sadiq Khan opened up about feeling unsafe as a Muslim politician in the wake of far-right riots sweeping across the UK. Khan, who grew up during the racial tensions of the 1970s and 80s, expressed deep concern over recent violent events, including the killing of three girls in Southport on July 29.
Reflecting on the past 10 days, Khan drew parallels between his own experiences growing up and the current climate of fear among minority communities. He highlighted the fears many Muslims now face in simply leaving home wearing headscarves or attending mosque for Friday prayers.
Khan also criticized online regulations, calling for a review of the Online Safety Act. He expressed worry over the spread of misinformation and disinformation, warning that politicians themselves are vulnerable to spreading false information.
Despite these challenges, Khan expressed pride in the anti-fascist demonstrators who took to the streets in London, but cautioned against complacency, noting that there is still work to be done to combat hate and intolerance.
