Iran’s US-educated Nuclear Chief Reappointed Despite Sanctions
Iran’s newly-elected president has re-appointed a US-educated official who was previously sanctioned by the United Nations as head of the country’s nuclear department. Mohammad Eslami, 67, will continue to lead Iran’s civilian nuclear program under President Masoud Pezeshkian, who aims to revive the 2015 nuclear deal amidst ongoing Western sanctions.
Eslami, originally sanctioned in 2008 for his involvement in Iran’s nuclear activities, has a background in Iran’s military industries and previously served as Transport and Urban Development Minister. With degrees from US universities, Eslami’s reappointment signals Iran’s commitment to advancing its nuclear capabilities for civilian uses.
Despite accusations from Western countries, Iran maintains that its nuclear program is peaceful, focusing on electricity generation and medical purposes. As the nation faces power outages, Iran is working on expanding its nuclear energy capacity to meet increasing demands.
With Eslami at the helm, Iran’s nuclear ambitions remain a focal point of global scrutiny and debate as the country navigates its diplomatic relations with the international community.
