The Niger Delta Budget Monitoring Group is calling on the Federal Government to investigate human rights violations during the hunger protests that took place nationwide starting on August 1, 2024. The group, led by Chief Executive Officer Anthony George-Hill and Nigeria Civic Space Protection Alliance member Stiv Obodoekwe, stressed the importance of democratic freedom and protecting civic space.
Their statement comes after a two-day civic space protection training in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, emphasizing the need for an environment where citizens can freely exercise their rights. The group urged the government to prioritize citizens’ interests, human rights, and democracy in its policies and actions. They called for thorough investigations into rights violations and holding those responsible accountable.
The group also warned against advocating for regime change through military intervention, asserting that democracy is preferable to military rule. They expressed the belief that Nigeria should serve as a democratic model for Africa, despite challenges it may face.
