In a recent development, the Blue House addressed Han Dong-hoon, the leader of the People Power Party, taking a stand against the pardon of Kim Kyung-soo, the former governor of Gyeongsangnam-do. The presidential office emphasized that the pardon and amnesty are within the exclusive authority of the president.
A Blue House official reiterated that the process is ongoing, and the list of recipients has not been finalized. Han Dong-hoon reportedly opposed pardoning Kim due to actions that undermine democracy and the former governor’s lack of acknowledgment.
The Ministry of Justice’s Pardon Review Committee added Kim to the list of special pardon recipients on August 8th, with the proposal set to be discussed at the Cabinet meeting on August 13th.
Kim Kyung-soo was convicted in the “Druking Comments Manipulation” scandal, receiving a two-year prison sentence in 2021, which was later commuted in December 2022. If pardoned, he would regain the right to participate in the 2026 local elections and the 2027 presidential election.
