Amid controversy, the United States has declared that the Netzah Yehuda battalion, known for repressive activities in the West Bank, is still eligible for US military assistance. Despite concerns about human rights violations, the Biden administration decided to continue support after reports of improvements in the battalion.
In a column for Just Security, Charles Blaha, a former official overseeing the Leahy Law, criticized the decision, suggesting pressure from Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu influenced the outcome. The fatal mistreatment of Palestinian American Omar Assad by battalion soldiers in 2022 raised calls to enforce the Leahy Law on Netzah Yehuda.
In response, the US called for accountability, but Israeli authorities opted for disciplinary action rather than criminal charges. This leniency towards soldiers involved in rights abuses highlights a larger trend of impunity in the occupation. Rights groups note a rise in attacks by settlers and soldiers on Palestinians, further eroding basic rights in the West Bank.
As the US continues to provide support despite concerns, the plight of Palestinians remains a challenging issue in the ongoing conflict.
