UN Condemns Thailand’s Decision to Dissolve Opposition Party

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, strongly criticized Thailand’s move to dissolve the opposition Move Forward Party (MFP) and ban its senior leaders from politics for several years. The decision by Thailand’s Constitutional Court to dissolve the party and bar its executives from politics for 10 years was deemed as a troubling undermining of democratic processes and political pluralism.

Turk emphasized the importance of upholding fundamental freedoms of expression and association, as well as people’s right to participate in public affairs and political life. The UN has long expressed concerns about Thailand’s lese-majeste law and called for its review to align with international human rights standards.

The Move Forward Party, which advocated for reforming the lese-majeste law, became the ninth prominent political party to be dissolved in Thailand since 2007. Turk urged the Thai government to ensure a vibrant and inclusive democracy that respects human rights and ends the use of lese-majeste laws to silence dissenting voices.
