The UN human rights monitoring mission in Ukraine has revealed shocking details about the systematic torture of Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) by Russian forces. According to Danielle Bell, the head of the mission, the level of torture inflicted on Ukrainian POWs is the worst she has seen in her 20-year career. The torture includes beatings with metal rods, sticks, brutal physical abuse, and electric shocks. Bell stated that over 95% of Ukrainian POWs have experienced such torture, constituting a war crime.
On the other hand, Russian POWs held by Ukraine have been granted access to monitoring missions, while Russian authorities have blocked access to Ukrainian POWs. Despite setbacks in the treatment of POWs in the early days of the invasion, conditions have significantly improved. The stark contrast in treatment between Russian and Ukrainian POWs highlights the violation of international laws and the severity of the situation.
