The Ukrainian leadership has requested permission from the US to use ATACMS to target Russian territory following an incursion into Russia’s Kursk Oblast. The Washington Post reported that this move could help Kyiv maintain control over the territory they have captured. The plan is to strike Russian military airfields conducting bombing raids on Ukrainian positions. This strategy aims to give Ukraine leverage in negotiations with Russia, according to an advisor to President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Within three days of the operation in Kursk Oblast, Ukrainian forces seized 100 square kilometers of territory and captured hundreds of Russian soldiers. They also control the Sudzha gas measuring station, a key facility for Gazprom’s fuel supply to Europe. The offensive involves about 1,000 soldiers from elite assault brigades equipped with Western armored vehicles. Despite Russian efforts to counter the offensive, Ukrainian forces continue to push forward.
There are speculations that the next target for Ukrainian forces might be the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant, which supplies energy to a large part of Russia. The plant’s security is reportedly lacking, posing a potential vulnerability. The ongoing conflict highlights the escalating tensions between Ukraine and Russia, with significant implications for both countries.
