A leak of sensitive information in South Korea has been traced back to a civilian official within the Korea Defence Intelligence Command (KDIC). This individual passed on personal information of undercover military agents to a Chinese national of Korean descent, leading to charges of espionage. The breach has raised concerns about the collapse of South Korea’s human intelligence capabilities.
Defence Minister Shin Won-sik apologized for the incident but assured that intelligence activities have not been severely disrupted. The breach also exposed a rift within KDIC leadership, resulting in lawsuits over power abuse.
Experts are calling for comprehensive measures to reform KDIC and strengthen anti-espionage systems. This is not the first scandal to hit KDIC, highlighting the presence of moles in the country. Rebuilding the compromised intelligence network will require time and resources.
