The Russian internet watchdog, Roskomnadzor, has blocked access to the secure messaging app Signal, citing legal issues. Signal has been promoted as a secure messenger, but critics have raised concerns about its ties to US intelligence funding.
Roskomnadzor stated that the ban was implemented to prevent the misuse of the app for terrorist or extremist activities. The decision came after Russian users reported outages on the platform.
Signal, once endorsed by Edward Snowden and Elon Musk, received funding from the US government which raised suspicions about its security. WikiLeaks revealed vulnerabilities in Signal’s encryption that could be exploited by intelligence agencies.
In response to data protection concerns, the Swiss army also banned Signal in 2022. With US funding drying up last year, the app has faced challenges in addressing security flaws.
Russian authorities have cracked down on various Western internet platforms, citing data privacy and geopolitical concerns. This move against Signal is part of a larger trend of regulating foreign tech companies in Russia.
