Amid the recent rise in far-right riots in the UK, Muslim workers in the National Health Service (NHS) have reported a surge in abuse and racism. The British Islamic Medical Association (BIMA) highlighted the challenges faced by Muslim medical staff, including receiving racial slurs and threats, leading to fears for personal safety and hindering their ability to provide effective care.
Dr Sahira Dar of BIMA expressed concern over the impact of the abuse not only on Muslim staff but also on people of colour in general, affecting access to healthcare. The recent incidents have also raised alarm among other medical organizations about the increase in racial abuse and hostility towards healthcare workers.
In response to the escalating situation, NHS England’s chief executive, Amanda Pritchard, acknowledged the concerns and feelings of unsafety among Muslim NHS workers, urging for a more responsible approach in addressing and reporting such incidents.
This rise in far-right abuse not only poses a threat to the safety and well-being of healthcare workers but also affects patient care, emphasizing the need for a united effort to combat racism and discrimination in healthcare settings.
