Power Restored after Major Outage in Santiago Metropolitan Region
The Chilean Government announced on Friday that the electricity company Enel successfully restored power to 20,000 households in the Santiago Metropolitan Region after a week-long outage. Undersecretary of the Interior Manuel Monsalve confirmed that all 21,468 customers had their service back. Enel deployed 25 generators to support the restoration efforts.
Energy Minister Diego Pardow emphasized that Enel must now focus on reconnecting an additional 14,000 households to meet the next deadline within 48 hours. Despite the progress, Pardow warned that Enel’s contract could still be in jeopardy if further commitments are not met.
The government also addressed the need to improve the regulatory framework for energy providers to prevent similar incidents in the future. Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren even reached out to Italian authorities due to Enel’s handling of the crisis.
