Abyei Conflict Calmed by South Sudan Security Officers
The Abyei Area experienced a period of relative calm following the intervention of top security officers from South Sudan to resolve the three-year deadly conflict between the Ngok Dinka and the Twic community of Warrap State.
Violence erupted in early February 2022 over the ownership of Aneet and surrounding areas, resulting in hundreds of deaths and numerous injuries, as well as mass displacements. Despite failed peace mediations, the government dispatched a security committee led by Chief of Defense Forces Gen Santino Deng Wol in May.
Gen Akol Koor Kuc and Gen Atem Marol also joined the delegation to help restore peace and deploy organized forces between the feuding groups. Ngok Dinka Paramount Chief Bulabek Deng Kuol commended the security team for their efforts, noting a significant decrease in direct confrontations between the communities.
While the security situation has improved, some challenges remain, with reports of robberies and illegal taxes along specific corridors. Contact attempts with the Twic community leader and local governments for further comments were unsuccessful.
