The Paraguayan Government has urged the United States to accelerate the departure of Ambassador Marc Ostfield from Asunción. This request comes after the diplomat expressed support for the sanctions imposed by the OFAC on the tobacco company Tabesa, associated with former President Horacio Cartes.

Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez Lezcano emphasized that while they do not question the use of US administrative tools, they have concerns about how the sanctions were communicated. Asunción is keen on ensuring that Ostfield’s exit does not harm the longstanding relationship between the two nations.

Paraguay stressed the importance of the strategic alliance with the US in various areas such as defense, security, anti-corruption efforts, trade, and investment. The OFAC’s recent ruling on Tabesa’s ties to Cartes further complicates the situation, leading to the call for Ostfield’s swift departure.

The US Senate is yet to confirm career diplomat Gabriel Escobar as the next Ambassador to Asunción, chosen by President Joseph Biden to replace Ostfield.
