Threat to Democracy: NLC Headquarters Raided by Security Operatives
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) is facing turmoil after armed security operatives invaded its headquarters, sparking outrage from various organizations. The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) condemned the raid, calling it an abuse of the democratic process.
NLC’s General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, expressed concern over the invasion and hinted at possible retaliatory actions if the government fails to provide an explanation. The Department of State Services (DSS) denied involvement in the incident, further deepening the crisis.
In response to the raid, the NLC called for a day of mourning to honor those affected by recent protests. The organization demanded accountability from the government and urged a reversal of policies contributing to economic crises in the country.
The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) also condemned the raid, emphasizing the need to protect citizens’ rights and uphold democratic principles. They called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the excessive use of force by security agencies and focus on addressing pressing economic and security challenges.
As tensions rise, the NLC and its allies are mobilizing to defend democracy and ensure the welfare of all Nigerians. The future remains uncertain as the government’s actions come under intense scrutiny.
