The Mexican government has declined Ukraine’s request to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin if he attends Mexico’s new head of state’s inauguration. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador stated that it is not within their jurisdiction to do so. Despite the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Putin over alleged war crimes, Mexico is obligated to follow standard protocol and invite leaders of all diplomatic relations to the event. President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum’s inauguration will also see the presence of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky. Putin, congratulating Sheinbaum on her victory, referred to Mexico as a historically friendly partner. Sheinbaum’s victory as Mexico’s first female president in June marked a historic moment.
