Maduro’s Controversial Ban on X in Venezuela
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has stirred controversy by banning the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) for 10 days. Accusing Elon Musk, the owner, of “inciting hatred” in the country, Maduro also targeted WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok as platforms that proliferate hate.
Maduro announced, “I have signed a point of account with the proposal made with Conatel to remove the social network X for 10 days from circulation in Venezuela.” He further criticized Musk for inciting hatred and fascism, labeling him as part of a “cyber coup d’état.”
Amidst political turmoil and alleged election fraud, the government launched “Operation Tun” to monitor controversial content on WhatsApp and X, leading to arrests and clashes. Maduro’s actions have sparked outrage and raised concerns about freedom of expression in Venezuela.
