Lebanon has announced its support for a joint initiative by the US, Egypt, and Qatar to establish a cease-fire in Gaza. Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib commended the efforts of the three leaders in forming a “framework agreement” and emphasized the importance of reaching a cease-fire based on principles outlined by President Biden and the UN.
The call for negotiations between Israel and Hamas comes after the assassination of Hamas’ political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, hindering progress towards peace. Despite months of indirect negotiations led by Egypt, Qatar, and the US, no agreement has been reached due to Israel’s reluctance to meet Hamas’ demands.
Israel’s ongoing military offensive has resulted in thousands of Palestinian casualties and widespread destruction in Gaza. The International Court of Justice has accused Israel of genocide and ordered an immediate halt to its military operations in Rafah.
In the midst of this devastating conflict, the international community is calling for urgent action to end the violence and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
