Israel recently revoked the accreditation of Norwegian diplomats handling relations with the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah. The decision came as a response to what Israel deemed as “anti-Israeli and unilateral steps” taken by the Norwegian government. The diplomats were given seven days to surrender their accreditations and three months to leave the country.
In the past year, Norway, along with Spain, Ireland, Slovenia, and Armenia, recognized Palestine as a state, which Israel strongly opposes. This move has strained relations between Israel and these countries, leading to retaliatory measures.
With a representative office in Ramallah, Norwegian diplomats must pass through Israeli checkpoints in the West Bank to reach their destination. The conflict between Israelis and Palestinians continues, with the recent Knesset vote rejecting the establishment of a Palestinian state.
The International Court of Justice also recently declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land as “illegal” and called for the removal of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The situation remains tense as both sides stand firm on their beliefs.
