Medical Student Association Suspends Israel Membership
The International Federation of Medical Student Associations (IFMSA) voted to suspend Israel’s membership for two years due to the Gaza conflict and allegations of genocide. The decision, brought up by the Brazilian association, was rushed through without proper notice.
IFMSA, representing medical student groups from 123 countries, aims to review the suspension in 2025 and 2026. Israeli representative Miri Schwimmer criticized the move as politically motivated and detrimental to their inclusive approach.
Israel Medical Association Chairman Zion Hagay protested the decision, questioning its basis in the federation’s constitution. The suspension, if not reversed, could lead to a permanent removal of Israel from IFMSA.
Despite efforts to prevent the suspension, Schwimmer emphasized Israeli aid to Palestinians and called for dialogue rather than drastic measures. Hagay emphasized the need for proper investigation and defense preparation before any suspension decision.
