New Era in Catalonia: Socialist Salvador Illa Elected President
The Catalan parliament made history on Thursday night by electing Socialist Salvador Illa as the region’s new president. This marks the first time a Socialist has led the separatist-dominated region since 2010. In his acceptance speech, Illa promised to govern for everyone with plurality and respect.
Catalonia’s hung parliament from May elections finally found a resolution after months of negotiations, with the Socialists gaining the support of the left-wing separatist party ERC. In return for their support, Spain’s progressive government pledged more financial autonomy for Catalonia, causing unease in other regions led by Socialists.
The dramatic entrance of fugitive former president Carles Puigdemont added intrigue to Illa’s election. Despite an active arrest warrant, Puigdemont appeared at the parliamentary session, reminding voters of the ongoing independence movement in Spain.
After his brief speech, Puigdemont managed to evade police and media, sparking a search operation in Barcelona. His whereabouts remain unknown, with two Catalan police officers detained for suspicions of aiding in his escape.
The Spanish government’s amnesty bill failed to clear the way for Puigdemont’s return, as an embezzlement charge against him could not be pardoned. The saga continues as the fugitive leader remains at large.
