As the mpox outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to escalate, the World Health Organization is considering declaring it a public health emergency of international concern. With over 27,000 cases and 1,100 lives lost, mostly children, this deadly and highly transmissible strain, Clade Ib subclade, is causing widespread panic.
Unlike previous strains, the Clade Ib strain causes skin rashes across the entire body, making it more easily identifiable. Researchers warn of a mortality rate as high as 10% among children, and the Congolese government has reported an exponential increase in cases.
Doctors Without Borders in DRC are working tirelessly in displacement camps where the population density is extreme, increasing the risk of the disease spreading rapidly. Surrounding countries like Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda have also reported cases, indicating the urgent need for international intervention.
With the situation becoming increasingly critical, the world awaits the decision of the emergency committee to combat this growing health crisis.
