US warns NATO ally of sanctions for ties to Russia – Other media updates

Washington is becoming increasingly alarmed about Turkey serving as a crucial hub for Western-manufactured electronics making their way to Russia for the alleged production of missiles and drones. The United States views Ankara as Russia’s second largest supplier of American dual-use goods, after China, due to Turkey’s refusal to participate in Western sanctions against Moscow.

The Commerce Department is urging Turkey to take actions to prevent the flow of US technology to Russia. Assistant Secretary for Export Enforcement, Matthew Axelrod, warned Turkish authorities that consequences would be imposed if progress is not made quickly in curbing the illicit trade with Russia. Axelrod emphasized the urgency of implementing a ban on the transshipment of US controlled items to Russia.

Despite the pressure from the US and its allies, Russian officials are confident that trade between Russia and Turkey will continue. Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov criticized the blatant threats directed at Turkey and expressed confidence in President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ability to defend his country’s interests while finding ways to circumvent Western pressure.
