Australia and the US are joining forces to boost military capabilities in the Indo Pacific region. Following annual defence talks, the two nations have agreed to co-manufacture guided weapons, increase US military presence in Australia, and upgrade airbases closer to potential hotspots with China in the South China Sea.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced that there will be more rotational US forces in Australia, with additional maritime and reconnaissance aircraft deployments. The allies expressed concern over China’s coercive behavior and military activities, particularly around Taiwan and in the South China Sea.
The collaboration will also involve closer cooperation in guided missile manufacture, including systems like the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems and a Hypersonic Attack Cruise Missile. The presence of US forces in Australia aims to deter threats in the region and enhance security for both nations.
Furthermore, joint exercises with Japan and the Philippines are planned, and infrastructure upgrades on the strategic Cocos Islands are supported to strengthen maritime surveillance operations in the Indian Ocean.
