Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Valentine of the Met emphasized that the police will not tolerate disruption and division on the streets. The chaos stemmed from misinformation surrounding a tragic stabbing incident in Southport, falsely implicating an immigrant and a Muslim.
As tensions escalate, internet chat groups have identified targets for Wednesday’s gatherings, prompting fears of further clashes. Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violence as “far-right thuggery,” with over 400 arrests made so far.
In response, the government has announced new measures to protect mosques, while London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan reassures targeted communities of support. Khan urged Londoners to show compassion and stand against hate in the face of uncertainty.
