ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, August 7. Turkmenistan has recently imposed a new decree prohibiting individuals under 18 from taking part in cotton harvesting activities. The Ministry of Labor and Social Protection has updated the list of banned jobs for minors to include roles such as “cotton picker” and “cotton grower,” as per the regulations established in 2018.
This updated decree has been formally registered with the Ministry of Justice, with oversight for implementation falling under the Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Protection. In a collaborative effort, Turkmenistan has also partnered with the International Labour Organization (ILO) to create a roadmap for 2024–2025
This roadmap focuses on eradicating forced labor, including both adult and child labor, during cotton harvesting. It includes measures to address instances of coercion or extortion and sets minimum wage standards for workers engaging in manual harvesting if required.
