Turkey Introduces ‘Steel Dome’ Defense System

Turkey is gearing up to develop its own version of Israel’s Iron Dome air defense system, dubbed as the Steel Dome. The decision was made during a recent meeting of the Defense Industry Executive Committee chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara.

The Steel Dome program aims to create a multi-layered air defense system using domestic resources, ensuring seamless integration of sensors, weapons, and defense systems. This networked structure will provide real-time situational awareness supported by artificial intelligence.

Aside from the Steel Dome, the meeting also discussed the development of Turkey’s first national combat aircraft, the acquisition of unmanned combat aerial vehicles, and the enhancement of the country’s space program. Plans for electronic warfare systems, monitoring technologies, and defense against mini drones and naval threats were also on the agenda.

The modernization of battle tanks and fighter aircraft using domestic technologies, along with the procurement of wheeled armored vehicles and naval craft, were topics of interest during the meeting.
