Turkey Joins South Africa’s Genocide Case Against Israel at ICJ
Turkey has officially submitted a bid to join South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), increasing global pressure on Israel to halt its atrocities in Gaza. The Turkish delegation, led by Ankara’s ambassador to The Hague, Selcuk Unal, filed the request on Wednesday, emphasizing the importance of resolving the Palestinian issue through law and justice.
With Turkey becoming the seventh country to join the case, Al Jazeera’s Sinem Koseoglu noted that additional parties strengthen the case against Israel. The Israeli offensive in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of nearly 40,000 Palestinians and brought the territory to the brink of famine, prompting allegations of genocide by South Africa.
The ICJ has issued orders for Israel to end the killing of Palestinians and provide humanitarian aid, yet enforcement remains a challenge. The Turkish intervention comes amidst escalating tensions between Turkey and Israel, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s vow to support Palestinians drawing criticism from Israeli officials.
