Spain, Netherlands reach women’s water polo semis

Spain and the Netherlands secured spots in the semifinals of the women’s water polo tournament at the Paris Olympics. Spain dominated Canada with an 18-8 victory, while the Netherlands defeated Italy 11-8. The two European powerhouses will clash at Paris La Defense Arena on Thursday.

Australia faced Greece, and the United States took on Hungary in the remaining quarterfinals. The U.S. aims for an unprecedented fourth consecutive gold medal.

Spain, looking to avenge their loss to the U.S. in the Tokyo final, remains undefeated at 5-0, outscoring opponents 69-44. Elena Ruiz and Bea Ortiz led Spain to victory, with Martina Terre making 12 saves.

In the Netherlands’ win, Simone van de Kraats, Brigitte Sleeking, Vivian Sevenich, and Lieke Rogge each contributed two goals. The Netherlands held a 6-5 lead heading into the final quarter and secured an 11-8 win.

Claudia Marletta stood out for Italy with three goals. Canada’s Verica Bakoc netted five goals in a losing effort. Both teams will compete in classification games on Thursday.
