Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has stressed the urgent need for social media companies to take threats seriously and remove harmful content promptly. This comes after a threat against Taoiseach Simon H. and his family remained online on Instagram despite requests for its removal by gardaí.
McEntee condemned the threat as “absolutely appalling” and emphasized that all threats, whether online or in person, should be treated with equal seriousness. Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has since removed the content for violating its policies and is conducting an investigation.
McEntee highlighted the establishment of Coimisiún na Meán to enforce online safety and ensure social media companies are held accountable for harmful content. She emphasized the need for stricter measures and closer collaboration between authorities and social media platforms to address online threats effectively.
In addition, McEntee expressed concerns about algorithms leading to harmful online behavior and emphasized the importance of global efforts to regulate social media companies. She also mentioned plans to introduce legislation banning mask-wearing at protests to prevent intimidation tactics.
