PTI Challenges Election Law in Supreme Court

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has taken a bold step by moving the Supreme Court to challenge a recently passed law that would prevent independent lawmakers from joining a political party after a certain period. The bill, known as the “Elections (Second Amendment) Act, 2024”, aims to amend the Elections Act 2017 and is perceived as an attempt to bypass a previous Supreme Court ruling that favored the PTI.

The legislation was hastily approved by both houses of Parliament, sparking strong opposition from the PTI. The PTI has now challenged the amendments, arguing that they are unconstitutional and undermine the democratic process. The party has petitioned the Supreme Court under Article 184(3) of the Constitution, seeking to uphold the rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

The law minister defended the changes, stating that they were based on existing practices. However, the PTI remains resolute in its stance and is hopeful that the Supreme Court will overturn the contentious amendments.

The PTI’s decision to challenge the law reflects its commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring a fair electoral process.
