The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) expressed grave concerns about the use of lethal force against participants in the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests. The party’s alarm follows the tragic death of 16-year-old protester Ismail Mohammed, who was shot by a soldier in Zaria, Kaduna State.
Despite claims that the soldier fired a warning shot to disperse hoodlums attacking security personnel, the bullet tragically struck Mohammed. The soldier has been arrested, and investigations are ongoing.
PRP’s National Chairman, Falalu Bello, emphasized the need for accountability and called for legislation to prohibit the use of live ammunition during protests. Bello also condemned rioters who vandalized public property.
While criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s response to the protests, Bello urged Nigerian youth to vote for change in the next election rather than calling for military intervention. He stressed the importance of peaceful democratic processes in achieving governance reform.
