Iran’s acting foreign minister, Baqeri Ali Bagheri Kani, addressed an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Saudi Arabia regarding the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Bagheri stated that Iran would respond appropriately at the right time. The US expressed hope that OIC members would discourage Iran from escalating tensions further.
The OIC meeting was held in Jeddah at the request of Iranian and Palestinian officials. While the bloc blamed Israel for the attack, they did not endorse any military action by Iran. Recent events have heightened tensions in the region, with concerns that Iran’s response could lead to a broader conflict.
Diplomatic efforts have been underway, with President Joe Biden engaging with leaders from Jordan, Qatar, and Egypt. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stressed the importance of not escalating the situation, emphasizing the need for stability in the region.
French President Emmanuel Macron also warned against Iranian escalation, urging the West to cease arms sales and support to Israel. The situation remains delicate, with efforts aimed at preventing further conflict.
