Tragic Kidnapping of School Students in Ethiopia Sparks Outrage

On July 2nd, 2024, over 160 school students from Debark University in the Amhara region were kidnapped while travelling on three public buses to Addis Ababa for summer break. Gunmen intercepted the buses near Garba Guracha town in Oromia province and demanded ransom from the families.

Despite the government’s claim that 160 students were rescued, families of the kidnapped students expressed doubt, citing ongoing lack of contact with their loved ones. The incident reflects a disturbing trend of kidnappings in Ethiopia, targeting not only students but also workers and civilians in various industries.

Efforts to secure the release of victims often end tragically, as demonstrated by the case of a driver whose body was found after his family paid a ransom. With concerns growing over the security crisis and the government’s response, international figures like the US Ambassador have highlighted the urgent need to address the escalating crime.
