Elon Musk has filed an antitrust lawsuit against the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM), accusing them of orchestrating an illegal boycott of X (formerly Twitter). Rumble, a video hosting platform, has also joined the lawsuit, which was filed in Texas. This legal action comes after a report by the US House of Representatives’ Judiciary Committee found that GARM worked to demonetize and harm “disfavored platforms.”
Musk made a bold statement on X, declaring, “We tried being nice for 2 years and got nothing but empty words. Now, it is war.” CEOs of X and Rumble, Linda Yaccarino and Chris Pavlovski respectively, supported this move, expressing their dissatisfaction with GARM’s behavior.
The lawsuit targets GARM, the World Federation of Advertisers, and specific GARM members like CVS Health and Mars. X is seeking significant damages as compensation.
Last month, the New York Post criticized GARM’s head, Robert Rakowitz, and its initiatives, linking them to a larger issue of censorship and control. The report revealed that GARM operates under the WFA, representing major ad buyers globally. Rakowitz’s actions against X had significant negative financial impacts, raising concerns about manipulation.
External commentary has also suggested ties between GARM and government-funded censorship efforts, further complicating the situation presented in the antitrust lawsuit.
