Despite an overall increase in research and development funding across the EU, Greece saw a significant decline in 2023, with a 17% drop in budget allocations compared to the previous year. This decrease brought the country’s spending on R&D to its lowest point since 2019, with a shift from 0.74% to 0.58% of GDP. However, when compared to a decade ago, the current figures are almost 48% higher, showing a slight improvement.
Per capita spending in Greece also fell to €122.40, below the EU average of €275.60. This highlights the country’s need to prioritize investment in research and development to catch up with its European counterparts. In comparison, countries like Norway, Iceland, and Switzerland spend significantly more per person on R&D.
The 2023 budget allocated €210.75 million to industrial production and technology, €141.44 million to health, and various amounts to other sectors like telecommunications, defense, and education. These figures indicate the areas where Greece is focusing its research efforts despite the overall reduction in funding.
