Her firm grip on power faced challenges with protests erupting over a court ruling on government job reservations, leading to a movement to oust her.
Amid mounting opposition and a death toll of at least 241, Army Chief Zaman withdrew his support from Hasina, citing the need to protect lives. This decision came after demonstrations escalated and the army showed signs of not suppressing the protests.
On the first day of an indefinite curfew, Hasina found herself trapped inside her residence as massive protests demanding her removal filled the streets. Faced with a situation spiraling out of control, the 76-year-old leader fled the country with her sister to India.
Indian officials confirmed that they had been in touch with political forces in Bangladesh to resolve the crisis through dialogue prior to Hasina’s departure.
