An all-male shortlist for the AU Commission Chairperson’s position in 2025 has been finalized, with the next deputy chairperson expected to be female from Northern Africa. Candidates include Raila Odinga, Mahmoud Ali Youssou, Anil Kumarsingh Gayan, and Richard James Randriamandrato. The finalists will be vetted by a panel of experts and must have at least a post-graduate qualification. The new rotational system mandates that the chairperson’s seat is contested by Eastern region countries, while the deputy comes from the North. Only candidates nominated through the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps of the Eastern region will be considered. After vetting and endorsement by the panel, candidates will participate in a televised debate, followed by a vote in February 2025. The winner must receive at least two-thirds of the votes of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government.
