Former Marine Corps 1st Division Commander Im Sung-geun’s bid for an honorary retirement has been denied amid an investigation by the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC) on suspicion of downsizing the Marine Corps’ martyr case under external pressure. The navy announced its decision on Im’s honorary retirement after holding a review committee on the matter on the 6th and receiving approval on the 7th.
Military personnel who have served for more than 20 years are eligible for an honorary retirement allowance if they voluntarily retire honorably before reaching the statutory retirement age. However, Defense Minister Suh Wonsik emphasized that those under investigation should not be granted an honorary retirement.
Im was previously cleared of negligence charges related to the drowning of a Marine Corps member during a search and rescue mission in 2020, but the ACRC investigation into allegations of influence-peddling and lobbying continues. Despite public calls to halt the process, Im remains ineligible for an honorary retirement.
