In the aftermath of a high-profile assassination in Tehran, the US has been delivering a clear message to Iran: escalating hostilities is not in their best interests. The State Department emphasized on Monday that the US is committed to defending Israel from attacks.
“We have consistently urged engagement with Iran to convey that escalating tensions is counterproductive and that we stand ready to protect Israel,” explained State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.
Miller warned that further escalation following the recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh would not benefit Iran or the region. The US is actively working to prevent a larger conflict in the Middle East.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken has been in talks with Qatari and Egyptian officials to address tensions in the region. He stressed the importance of all parties taking steps to de-escalate and promote calmness in the coming days.
Despite questions about Iran’s right to self-defense, Miller emphasized the importance of avoiding actions that could lead to more tension and conflict, highlighting the risk of spiraling out of control.
