US Justice Department Sues TikTok for Allegedly Violating Children’s Privacy
The US Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against TikTok, accusing the popular social media platform of unlawful data collection from children and allowing them to create accounts without parental consent. The lawsuit alleges that TikTok violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by collecting personal information such as email addresses and phone numbers without proper authorization.
In 2019, TikTok settled with the Federal Trade Commission over similar allegations but has allegedly continued to breach COPPA regulations. Despite offering a “Kids Mode,” the app allegedly allowed children under 13 to access the regular TikTok experience, collecting extensive personal data without parental consent.
The lawsuit is the latest legal challenge for TikTok, which is also facing potential bans and fines in Europe. The FTC has been investigating TikTok’s privacy practices, and now the DOJ seeks penalties and court orders to prevent further violations of children’s privacy rights.
While TikTok denies the allegations, the lawsuit highlights the ongoing concerns about protecting young users’ privacy and safety on social media platforms.
