The United Nations called the famine in a displaced persons camp in Sudan a “shameful stain” on the international community’s conscience, despite multiple warnings. Last week, a famine was declared in the Zamzam camp near El-Fasher, in Darfur, marking the first such declaration in over seven years. The World Food Programme emphasized that famine is a real threat that hasn’t received the necessary attention.
The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and paramilitary forces has led to tens of thousands of deaths and displaced over 10 million people. The World Food Programme stressed that a ceasefire is crucial to prevent further famine spread. However, humanitarian aid efforts have been hindered by both sides of the conflict, with the Adre border crossing closed for months.
While the US proposed a UN mechanism to ease the passage of aid through Adre, the Sudanese ambassador emphasized Sudan’s sovereignty in handling the situation. The international community must act swiftly to address the crisis and prevent further suffering in the region.
