Lawmakers in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) have taken action following a surge in gun crime in Juba City. Concerned about the recent spike in shootings and violent incidents, they have resolved to summon ministers overseeing security sector institutions to provide explanations.
MP Bol Joseph Agau expressed grave concerns over the situation, citing a particularly intense incident at the Seventh-Day Roundabout. He emphasized the need for answers and accountability from the executive.
Supporting the call for accountability, MP Kom Kom Geng urged that the relevant ministers be summoned to address the rampant killings. TNLA’s First Deputy Speaker, Oyet Nathaniel, has instructed the legal advisor to speed up the process of summoning the ministers in response to the escalating crime rate.
The surge in violence has highlighted criticism of the government’s handling of security issues. Residents have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with law enforcement measures and have called for more robust responses to the violence.
The recent shooting incident in the Sherikat suburb, which resulted in one death and one injury, underscores the growing concern over gun-related violence in Juba. Many attribute this trend to the country’s severe economic crisis, exacerbating social tensions.
