Russian envoy warns U.S.-Japan alliance of nuclear threats to neighbors

U.S.-Japan Alliance Raises Nuclear Threats to Neighbors, Says Russian Envoy

The Russian Ambassador to Japan, Nikolai Nozdrev, expressed concerns on Monday about the growing nuclear threat posed by the U.S.-Japan alliance to neighboring countries. Nozdrev highlighted the rapid military buildup between Washington and Tokyo, which includes the integration of command structures, strengthening of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces, and collaboration in defense industries.

Nozdrev criticized the discussions on the use of nuclear weapons in joint operations, supported by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s administration, as “particularly cynical” given the upcoming anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. He condemned Japan’s willingness to cooperate with the U.S. on nuclear planning, despite the historical context.

The envoy’s remarks followed a recent joint statement between U.S. and Japanese officials, affirming the use of nuclear deterrence to protect Japan against external threats. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reiterated America’s commitment to defend Japan through various means, including nuclear capabilities.
