Liberal Senator Linda Reynolds has connected Kimberley Kitching’s passing to the ongoing controversy surrounding Brittany Higgins’ rape accusation during a defamation trial.
Senator Reynolds is taking legal action against Brittany Higgins over social media posts that she believes have tarnished her reputation with alleged misinformation.
“I said to her, ‘Why would anybody weaponize such an incident?'” Senator Reynolds mentioned.
Senator Reynolds revealed that Senator Kitching had handed a letter containing allegations about the handling of Higgins’ incident in 2019 to the Australian Federal Police, causing tension with Senator Penny Wong.
She expressed her disbelief that Labor would devise such a plan and escalated the issue to the prime minister’s office, causing emotional turmoil as she linked it to Senator Kitching’s passing.
Senator Reynolds recollected feeling sick and facing media scrutiny after Higgins’ allegation of mistreatment of her rape claim became public.
Despite her doubts about Higgins’ account, Senator Reynolds chose not to pursue the matter under parliamentary privilege, as she believed it was not ethically right to do so.
