Niger follows Mali, ends diplomatic relations with Ukraine

Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane (C-R) and General Mohamed Toumba (C-L) are greeted by supporters in Niamey, in August 2023.

Niger and Mali have both cut diplomatic ties with Ukraine, accusing Kyiv of supporting terrorist groups. Their decisions come after heavy losses suffered by the Malian army at the hands of jihadists and separatists, partly attributed to Ukraine. Both countries, under military rule from recent coups, have turned to Russia for military assistance, severing defense agreements with France.

‘The rebels received all the necessary information’

Mali’s decision followed remarks by a Ukraine military intelligence spokesman that implied support for rebels. The Ukrainian government denied the accusations, emphasizing adherence to international law. Intense fighting near the Algerian border resulted in casualties on both sides, further fueling the diplomatic rift.
