Anti-coup fighters claim victory as they seize control of key military base in Lashio
Myanmar’s army chief, Min Aung Hlaing, admitted that his troops are feeling the pressure after anti-coup fighters successfully took over a crucial military base in Lashio.
The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), part of an alliance of ethnic armed groups, announced the capture of the army’s Northeastern Command headquarters over the weekend.
Min Aung Hlaing, in a statement, mentioned security concerns in northern Shan State and accused the anti-coup forces of escalating violence and collaborating with external influences.
Since seizing power in February 2021, the military has faced increasing resistance, with casualties rising to almost 5,500 civilians and thousands imprisoned for opposing the coup.
The fall of Lashio represents a significant blow to the military regime, as it is a strategic location close to the Chinese border and crucial for their grip on power.
This latest development underscores the continued struggle between the military junta and the resistance forces seeking to restore democracy in Myanmar.
