Microfinance Pioneer Yunus Ready to Lead Bangladesh’s Interim Government
Bangladesh Nobel winner Muhammad Yunus, known for lifting millions out of poverty, has expressed his readiness to head a caretaker government following the military’s takeover amid mass protests that led to longtime ruler Sheikh Hasina fleeing.
Yunus, 84, has earned the respect of millions of Bangladeshis and has been endorsed by student leaders to lead an interim government in order to restore peace and ensure free elections. Hasina’s 12-year rule faced allegations of election rigging, sparking nationwide demonstrations calling for her resignation.
Following Hasina’s departure, the military announced plans to form an interim government and dissolve parliament, meeting the demands of student leaders and the opposition party. The unrest, resulting in over 400 casualties, led to jubilant celebrations and calls for political reform in a country long plagued by political turmoil.
